The Muscular System
Objective: Locate muscles of the muscular system
Muscles of the Shoulder and Back
Description:
The latissimus dorsi is a large muscle wrapped around the sides of the thoratic region and chest, its purpose it to extend the upper forelimb at the shoulder point. The trapezius, is the muscle anterior to the latissimus dorsi, its purpose it to elevate the shoulder. The deltoid is a muscle that covers the shoulder region, its purpose it to raise or pull the upper forelimb anteriorly.

Muscles of the Forelimb
Description:
The triceps branchii is the muscle that covers most of the outer and posterior surface of the upper forelimb, its purpose is to extend the lower forelimb at the elbow. The biceps branchii is a spinde-shaped muscle that covers the anterior muscle of the humerus, it flexes the lower forelimb and acts as an antagonistic pair with the triceps.

Muscles of the Throat and Chest
Description:
The sternocephalic is a long muscle that lies ventral to the brachiocephalic, its purpose is to flex the head.
The sternohyoid consists of two long flat strips that run from the sternum to the hyoid, its purpose it to retract and depress the base of the tongue and the larynx when it contracts. The pectoral group, originates on the ventral side of the sternum and the humerus, its purpose it to adduct the upper forelimb at the shoulder.

Muscles of the Abdominal Region
Description:
The external oblique is one of the major lateral abdominal muscles. The rectus abdominis flexes the trunk and compresses the abdominal viscera. The sartorious is a thigh muscle and it helps flex the thigh at the hip. The quadriceps femoris pull the thigh anteriorly. The gastrocnemius helps flex the shank at the knee, it originated from the distal end of the femur and the head of the fibula.
